Understanding Fannie Mae’s Home Purchase Sentiment Index (HPSI)

If you are following home purchase trends, whether you are a buyer or a seller, you will find many sources and indexes that will help you in your decision making process.

One valuable Index is Fannie Mae’s Home Purchase Sentiment Index (HPSI). Fannie Mae defines the HPSI as “Our monthly National Housing Survey® is a nationally representative telephone survey polling 1,000 consumers a month about owning and renting a home, home and rental price changes, the economy, household finances, and overall consumer confidence. Respondents are asked more than 100 questions, six of which are distilled into a single indicator – the Home Purchase Sentiment Index®, or “HPSI” – designed to provide signals on future housing outcomes.”

A recent article written by Jann Swanson for MortgageNewsDaily.com includes a recap of the HPSI for November 2020:  Buyers and Sellers Divided as Pandemic Wears Down Housing Expectations
